Secluded Contours, Halifax Stanfield International Airport, Halifax, Nova Scotia, December 2015 - August 2016

Topographic maps have been used since the late nineteenth century to display elevation of landforms. In contemporary mapping, contour lines are now used to describe this information. Secluded Contours combines the use of contour lines as the underlining structure to a process-based method of working that is key to representing the tactility these maps represent.

Working abstractly allows Johnson to use pre-determined structures, such as image transfers from contemporary topographic maps, as the starting point of a work in order to focus on elements of process more intensely. By choosing non-traditional map colours, this work presents an alternative vision of topography.
